After writing countless reviews, I find myself unusually reflective as I approach this one. This book left such a profound impression that crafting the right words feels challenging. Let me begin by summarizing the story:
Yunjae, a Korean boy with an underdeveloped amygdala, suffers from alexithymia. This brain disorder inhibits the ability to identify or experience emotions in a typical way, both in oneself and others. Due to his struggle with empathy and emotional connection, Yunjae often becomes a target of negative attention. Among those drawn into his orbit is Gon, a juvenile delinquent with his own set of deep-seated issues. Their relationship, forged in circumstances far from ideal, evolves into a fascinating study of contrasts: Yunjae, the "good boy" who feels nothing, and Gon, the "bad boy" who feels far too much.Their dynamic is compelling, especially the bluntness between them. I loved how they accepted each other as they were, without pretence or the need to conform to societal norms. This authenticity formed the foundation of their special friendship, allowing it to flourish despite its rocky beginnings. Without revealing too much, itโs safe to say their bond is as thought-provoking as it is heartwarming.
Told from Yunjae's perspective, the English translation does an excellent job of mirroring his emotionless nature. Writing is straightforward and free of literary embellishments, ideally suited to the main character. The book, though short, is incredibly impactful, diving deeply into the minds of its characters and exploring their motivations with clarity. Itโs a masterclass balancing simplicity with emotional depth, much like Yunjae.
What stands out most is how the story delicately weaves together family, friendship, and even romance into a seamless exploration of the human condition. Yunjaeโs portrayal felt incredibly human despite his emotional challenges. The relationships he managesโwhether familial, platonic, or romanticโare rendered with remarkable nuance, making the story truly special.
The translation is exceptional, and the pacing keeps the reader engaged throughout. The book is perfect for those who enjoy mature, heartfelt storylines and unique topics. Itโs a poignant, layered narrative that will stay with you long after youโve turned the last page.
In short, no words of mine can fully capture the beauty and depth of this book. Itโs a rare gem that I wholeheartedly recommend.
