This dual-POV novel follows Bree and Nathan, two long-time friends who navigate their undeniable chemistry. Bree, a dedicated ballet dancer whose professional aspirations were curtailed by a knee injury, now channels her passion into running a dance studio for underprivileged girls. Nathan, a charismatic and highly sought-after professional football player, is effortlessly captivating.
Their story begins with a light-hearted yet significant incidentโBree arriving at Nathanโs house for their customary early morning run, only to be confronted by his latest romantic entanglement, who promptly delivers an ultimatum. Nathanโs response? He chooses Breeโnot as a love interest, but as his friend.
From the outset, it is evident that both characters harbor deep feelings for one another, something they openly acknowledge in their respective points of view. Although they have been friends for years, they have built walls and do not know how to dismantle them.
Years of denying their feelings come to a head after one fateful night out, a viral video, and the unexpected involvement of a Tide Pen (a seemingly miraculous stain remover for those unfamiliar with it). Suddenly, an opportunity arises that could help Bree secure financial stability and provide Nathan with much-needed positive publicity. The catch? They must pretend to be in a relationship. What follows is a journey of self-discovery, heartfelt moments, and the realization that sometimes, love has been right before you all along.
This book features all the signature elements of the authorโs styleโsweet, closed-door romance, charming family moments, and a light-hearted atmosphere. The writing is effortless and engaging, with an excellent narrative that makes for an enjoyable read. The book's initial half moves quickly, but the last few chapters slow down, slightly affecting the overall pace. The characters are well-crafted, and the supporting cast is equally charming and intriguing.
Although the book has many strengths, I rate it four stars, not five. You might be wondering why. This is due to the portrayal of the female lead. When it comes to quirky heroines, there is a fine line between being charmingly eccentric and appearing immature. Sometimes, she errs too far toward the latter, resulting in frustrating interactions. At times, her relationship with the male lead, who is calm, mature, and level-headed, only accentuates this contrast, making her character less compelling.
That said, the book remains a thoroughly enjoyable read, and I would still highly recommend it to fans of rom-coms and light-hearted romance. If you enjoy sweet, feel-good love stories, this one is worth picking up!
My Rating:
4/5
