The central character, Breed, is a former Delta Force sniper, having recently left the military after his unit disbanded—one member opted not to re-enlist. Two others, however, were forced to retire due to injuries. After only six months in civilian life, Breed has to deal with a tragedy: his old comrade, Dan Keller, has been killed on his ranch in El Paso, Texas. Around the same time, a terrorist attack on a New York City subway makes headlines, setting the stage for a complex web of danger.
Joined by his surviving teammates, Mark Lenson and Bill Hancock, Breed attends Keller’s funeral and vows to bring those responsible for his friend’s murder to justice. The situation turns more harrowing when they learn that not only was Keller shot but his body and those of his wife and young son were desecrated in a brutal, jihadist-style manner. In contrast to local law enforcement's belief, it appears the killers are still in the area, aiming to eliminate any loose ends.
While Lenson and Hancock return home, Breed stays behind, honouring his promise to remain for a week. His investigation into Keller’s death takes a decisive turn when he discovers a woman named Marisol, stationed near an abattoir and meat-packing factory—a major local employer—who holds crucial information that transforms the case into something far more extensive.
Marisol, a Latino reporter with a troubled past and deep personal ties to human trafficking, introduces an additional layer of complexity. Her work investigating these illicit activities overlaps with Breed’s quest for justice. Meanwhile, a Dept. of Justice agent, Stein, is also involved, tracking terrorist threats from Iran that could escalate into a national crisis. With the border between El Paso and Mexico serving as the battleground, Breed and Marisol find themselves entangled in a treacherous world of cartel violence, human trafficking, and corruption. Together, they must uncover the access points terrorists are using to infiltrate the U.S., all while navigating the danger posed by entrenched criminal networks.

This gripping novel is not only a pulse-pounding action thriller but also a starkly realistic portrayal of the porous U.S.-Mexico border, the grim realities of human trafficking, and the ongoing struggle with cartel violence. The richly detailed narrative draws readers into a world fraught with danger, where every step closer to the truth leads to new, deadly consequences. It’s a story that hooks you from the start and keeps you turning pages until the final, explosive showdown.
It's written in straightforward, accessible language, with a smooth and engaging narration. If you are a fan of Hollywood-style action, you’ll find the pacing fast and exciting. However, you might need to look up a few terms for those less familiar with this genre. I found the pacing to fluctuate - sometimes it moves smoothly, sometimes it slows down a bit. That said, I would certainly recommend this book to action enthusiasts, fans of high-octane Hollywood thrillers, or those who enjoy stories centred around intelligence agencies like the CIA or RAW. It’s a thrilling read worth diving into!
