"Loathe to Love You" book is a collection that features standalone stories about three women who formed a lasting friendship during their post-grad years and maintained it despite their careers taking them to different corners of the world. Each character developed with unique personalities, backgrounds, flaws, and strengths.
Under One Roof: Liam and Mara inherit the same house and neither is willing to compromise, leading to an amusing cohabitation. Despite their stark differencesโLiam works for big oil and Mara is an environmentalistโtheir bickering over small things like who stole the creamer is entertaining. As they spend more time together, they realize their initial assumptions were wrong, and a slow-burn romance develops, filled with longing and undeniable attraction.
Stuck with You: Sadie and Erik shared an intense connection that led to a passionate night, but Sadieโs heart shatters the next day when she hears rumours about Erik. Weeks later, fate traps them together in an elevator. While I found Sadieโs quick judgment disappointing, their initial chemistry was compelling. Despite the miscommunication, their romance unfolds predictably yet satisfyingly.
Below Zero: Almost five years ago, Hannah and Ian shared a brief yet passionate connection. Hannah, wanting only a physical relationship, moved on, but they met again when Hannah joined NASA, where Ian works. Misunderstandings ensue, as Hannah believes Ian sabotaged her project. However, Ian becomes her saviour when she is trapped in an icy crevasse, showing that their connection runs deeper than anticipated.
I found these three novellas quite disappointing. Each story felt repetitive, with only slight variations in writing style. There was a similar premise: a quirky woman in STEM meets a man through a meet-cute scenario, but a minor inconvenience leads her to hate him, and she wrongly believes that he wants her dead. Eventually, the misunderstanding is resolved, revealing that the man was in love with her all along, leading to a passionate encounter and a predictable ending.
The male characters were indistinguishable from one another, all tall, handsome, brooding, and suffering from scornful misunderstandings by the brilliant yet socially inept heroines. They possessed stereotypical features, smelling like a mix of muffins and spicy aftershave, and their expressions rarely varied from a mild lip curl. Physically incapable of showing more than a mild lip curl, with voices as deep as possible and exaggerated physical attributes that are better left unmentioned. The female characters were equally frustrating, portrayed as "pick-me" girls who blamed others for their misfortunes.
Of the three novellas, I liked 'Under One Roof' the most. It was funny and light-hearted and made me wish for an extended version of the story. However, "Stuck with You" was dry and insufferable, while "Below Zero" bored me so badly that I couldn't finish it.
In conclusion, I can't recommend this book. However, feel free to read my review and decide for yourself whether you would like to give it a try.
My Rating:
3/5
