Readers of Chase Me will remember Ben and Honey as friends of the leads, Louis and Roxy. In this sequel, they take center stage.
Honey Perribow, a small-town girl from Kentucky, has always yearned for a life beyond her hometown. Now a medical student at Columbia University, sheโ€™s smitten with her charismatic and dashing English professor, Ben Dawson. Ben, for his part, is a dedicated young professor passionate about his work. Despite his charm, he maintains strict boundaries, avoiding entanglements with students and preferring relationships with older- safe- women to keep his professional life intact. Yet, his fascination with the brilliant writing of an anonymous studentโ€”unbeknownst to him, Honeyโ€”sets the stage for unexpected tension.
The plot thickens when Roxy and Louis throw a party, leading to Honey and Ben being locked in a closet together. While Honey recognizes Ben instantly and seizes the opportunity to act on her long-standing crush, Ben is oblivious to her identity and irresistibly drawn to the mysterious stranger.

While the premise had potential, it failed to meet my expectations. For me, the story leaned heavily into physical attraction at the expense of emotional depth. The connection between Honey and Ben lacked chemistry and felt rushed. Their relationship seemed more like a whirlwind of lust than a heartfelt romance, with minimal character or relational development. They meet, share a few steamy encounters, and suddenly view each other as soulmatesโ€“an arc that doesn't feel earned or satisfying.
At times, Honey's character appears frustratingly immature despite being sweet and ambitious. She is a weak protagonist because of her willingness to forgive Ben's behavior and impulsive decisions. Despite his kindness and charm, Ben was often hypocritical and inconsistent, and his actions had no sense of genuine romance.
Overall, the premise of a teacher-student dynamic deserved more nuance and depth than this book provided. While I wanted to enjoy it after finding Chase Me underwhelming, this sequel left me similarly disappointed. You may not enjoy this book if you want a story with meaningful connection and emotional resonance.

The language and narration in this book are well-crafted. However, much like its predecessor, this story leans more towards erotica than romance. Although I'm not against erotica, I personally prefer stories with compelling plots, strong protagonists, and steamy romance. Neither of these books has engaging narratives or memorable leads. Despite this, steamy romance fans may still find this book enjoyable.

My Rating:

3/5
