In Practice Makes Perfect, the second instalment of the When in Rome series, Sarah Adams once again crafts a delightful and heartwarming romance that can be enjoyed as a standalone. However, starting with the first book is highly recommended for those who wish to gain a deeper understanding of the characters and their intertwined histories.
Annie Walker, a flower shop owner in Rome, Kentucky, seemingly has everything she desires—except for love. Determined to change that, she embarks on a journey to find her perfect match. However, dating proves to be a challenge, and after overhearing an unkind remark about herself, she confides in her soon-to-be sister-in-law, Amelia. Rather than turning to her sisters, who would undoubtedly make a fuss, Annie finds unexpected support in Amelia, who devises an unconventional plan: enlisting her executive protection agent, Will Griffin, as Annie’s dating coach.
Will, shaped by a complicated past, harbours deep reservations about trust and love. While he initially approaches their arrangement with professional detachment, it soon becomes evident that their dynamic is anything but ordinary. The classic opposites-attract trope comes to life through Annie’s sweet optimism and Will’s brooding intensity, making their chemistry undeniable. Watching them navigate their relationship with honesty and emotional growth was truly a joy.

One of the most charming aspects of this series is how each book spotlights a beloved side character from the previous instalment, allowing their stories to flourish in unexpected and captivating ways. Adams masterfully blends small-town charm with swoon-worthy romance, creating a narrative that is as heartfelt as it is engaging. While the story carries a touch of spice, it remains tasteful—perfectly balancing tension and longing.
As always, Sarah Adams’ writing is effortlessly engaging, with a smooth and compelling narrative that creates a delightful reading experience. The storytelling is captivating, and the character development is exceptionally well executed, allowing each personality to shine in a way that feels authentic and endearing.
This book has everything a romance enthusiast could wish for—a well-crafted plot, charming protagonists, a fantastic supporting cast, and an abundance of heartwarming moments. True to Adams’ signature style, the romance is sweet, swoon-worthy, and tastefully closed-door, making it a perfect choice for those who appreciate love stories brimming with warmth and tenderness.

This novel is an absolute must-read for readers who enjoy small-town settings, the fake-dating trope, and the irresistible dynamic of a brooding bad boy falling for a sunshine-hearted heroine. I thoroughly enjoyed this instalment and eagerly anticipate the next book in the series.
