Ginger, a young woman escaping an abusive home alongside her sister, finds herself living next door to Derek, a police officer whose possessiveness and temper surface at the slightest inconvenience. From the moment he sees Ginger, his attraction is heavily tainted by physical desire, leading to aggressive flirtation and an immediate sense of entitlement regarding her. His actions, such as leveraging his position in law enforcement to monitor her workplace and deter male patrons, create a scenario that the book acknowledges could jeopardise her jobโ€”her sole means of financial independence. Additionally, the narrative subtly undermines her profession, portraying bartending as something beneath her.

Derek's character leans heavily into dominance; however, his controlling nature often appears overbearing instead of being protective or enhancing the romance. His tendency to instruct Ginger, react with anger instead of engaging in communication, and show up uninvited at her workplace raises concerns about the balance of power in their relationship. While possessive heroes can be appealing when handled thoughtfully, his behaviour veers towards toxic, making it difficult to root for their connection. The romance progresses from instant physical attraction to love without meaningful development, rendering their emotional bond unconvincing.

Having read four books by this author, Iโ€™ve noticed a recurring pattern in the portrayal of romance. The relationships often begin with intense physical attraction and numerous intimate encounters before love is ever acknowledged. While some readers may relish this style, it doesn't align with my perspective on love and emotional connection. The book is still better than the previous three I've read. The writing remains engaging, with accessible language and smooth narration. This book is filled with passionate, steamy romance, and if you enjoy possessive, dominant male leads in erotica, youโ€™ll likely find it entertaining. Conversely, this story may not appeal if you prefer emotional development alongside physical chemistry.

My Rating:

3.5/5
