In this captivating narrative, we follow Maya as she transforms into 'Mayaben', a woman whose life has been shaped by profound betrayal and loss. The story revolves around Mayaโ€™s experiences with three men she deeply loved: the first vanished without commitment, the second proved to be an irresponsible husband who continually guilt-tripped her, and the third married her with the sinister intent of selling her to an Arab. Amid these trials, it is her adopted brother, Madhav, who heroically intervenes to save her, tragically losing his own life in the process. Readers are left with an intriguing mystery since it is not her husband who kills Madhav.
The story opens with Jigar and his wife Mona, who find themselves trapped in the schemes of Mayaben, now the Chief Minister. She orders Jigar to commit murder, and as he seeks to understand why, the narrative shifts to Mayaโ€™s pastโ€”beginning with her school days and moving through the complex relationships, marriage, motherhood, and her eventual foray into the world of politics.

It is a brief read, spanning just under 150 pages, and given its suspenseful nature, Iโ€™ll refrain from revealing too much of the storyline to preserve the thrill for future readers. Let's instead focus on other aspects of the book. The narration is smooth, and the language is simple, making it an easy read, especially for those new to reading in English. This book seems well-suited for novice readers or those looking to start their journey into English-language books.
However, for more seasoned readers, the experience might be different. As an avid reader, I noticed several gaps in the plot, which may make the story feel less engaging for those accustomed to more intricate narratives. The characters, unfortunately, lack depth and can be hard to connect with. While it is a work of fiction, a certain level of logic is often required to maintain believability. In this case, readers may need to set aside certain expectations of realism to immerse themselves fully in the story. As I said, this book might interest those new to reading or looking for something light.

My Rating:

2.5/5
