Sahei Inugami lived a life as intricate as a spider's webโ€”a tale of rising from rags to riches, entangled with three known mistresses bearing three children and grandchildren, sprinkled with a few clandestine affairs. Yet, the most striking revelation awaited in his final will, a ticking time bomb poised to detonate upon his passing.
The lawyer, entrusted with unravelling Sahei's final wishes, faced a peculiar stipulation: the will could not be read until the arrival of his eldest grandson, Kiyo, from the war or after one year from Sahei's demiseโ€”whichever came first. After a brief delay, Kiyo did return, his face hidden behind a mask, a grim reminder of the war's toll. The family's shock was palpable when they learned that everything had passed to Tamayo Nonomiya, granddaughter of Sahei's beloved mentor, Daini Nonomiya. Yet, the twist in the tale did not end there. Tamayo's inheritance hinged on a complex condition: she must select one of Sahei's three grandsons as her husband, or if all three declined, she would inherit the fortune outright. It seemed like a no-brainerโ€”why would they refuse, when the promise of a vast fortune lay before them?

However, the will didn't stop at that. It laid out a labyrinth of provisions and contingencies, hinting at potential family feuds at best and sinister motives at worst. Amidst whispers of conceivable foul play, one of the junior lawyers in charge of Inugami's affairs foresaw the looming spectre of murder. He reached out to the renowned private investigator, Kosuke Kindaichi, sensing that unravelling the threads of this intricate web would require a keen eye.
A clandestine meeting was planned at a hotel near the Inugami estate, but tragedy struck before secrets could be disclosed. The junior lawyer fell victim to poison, leaving behind only shadows of the dark suspicions that plagued him.
As the heirs began to meet untimely ends, Kindaichi, accompanied by the local police, delved into the heart of the mystery. First, they needed to determine whether the killer was an heir driven by greed, or whether there was a more sinister vendetta from the past. Amidst the chaos and mounting body count, a mysterious figure, a soldier with a face obscured by a muffler, lurked in the shadows. What role did this enigmatic presence play in the tragedy unfolding? Only time would reveal the truth behind the tangled web of Sahei Inugami's legacy.

This marks my fourth book by the author, and once again, the translation flows seamlessly, ensuring a swift and engaging narrative. Set against the backdrop of 1950 or earlier, these stories exude a classic charm that I find thoroughly enjoyable. The characters are crafted with depth, drawing readers into their world effortlessly.
Having perused my previous reviews, you might observe a recurring themeโ€”I've relished each of the author's works, yet have settled on a 4 or 4.5-star rating each time. This latest addition earns a 4.5-star rating as well, but why? While the plots are captivating and the pacing relentless, even the criminals' motivations are robustly portrayed. However, there is a slight misstep towards the conclusion. In each book, I've noticed a similar patternโ€”a slight falter in the author's ability to fully flesh out the criminal's perspective and story dragged at some point towards the end.

My Rating:

4.5/5
