Spencer Harris is ready for a fresh start after a traumatic experience at his previous high school. He's Black, fifteen, nerdy, and talented at soccer. His new private school offers a clean slate, and despite his initial plan to "lay low," Spencer can't resist joining the soccer team. No one at Oakley knows he's trans, and while Spencer isn't ashamed of his identity, he wants to avoid the bullying and harassment he faced before.
Spencer quickly bonds with his teammates, but his life gets complicated when he develops a crush on one of them and defies his parents by joining the team. Matters worsen when Spencer gets benched due to a discriminatory law.

The side charactersโ€”Riley, Grayson, Macintosh, Cory, Travis, and the coachโ€”are incredibly engaging. Their diverse personalities make the story vibrant and relatable. The representation in the book is authentic and inclusive, showcasing various aspects of the LGBTQ+ community. The plot is straightforward and well-paced, making for an enjoyable read from start to finish. The story is consistent, avoiding the pitfalls of being too fast-paced or slow. The language is easy and lucid, and the narration is outstanding.
"The Passing Playbook" is a joyful and comforting read filled with love and acceptance. Spencer's relationshipsโ€”with his parents, friends, and himselfโ€”are heartwarming and genuine. This book, clearly written with LGBTQ+ teenagers in mind, feels like a warm hug. Isaac Fitzsimons emphasizes joy over pain, highlighting friendship, love, team spirit, and acceptance. It's an easy, heartwarming read that flies by, leaving you surprised when you reach the end.

This wholesome book features a sweet romance and strong family and friendship dynamics and addresses realistic, current issues. Even the occasional cheesy moment adds to its charm. With a big heart, the author treats his characters and their struggles with empathy and understanding. If you're looking for a cute queer romance, this is the book for you.
