The Trail of Blood is an Indian police procedural crime fiction novel featuring ACP Agni Mitra as the lead detective. It is part of the series ACP Agni Mitra. I have not read the previous volumes, but this one feels like a standalone police procedural with a specific case that comes to a natural conclusion by the end.
Deboleena Mukherjee, a famous singer, is found dead in her house along with an anonymous person who was shot in the head. Upon learning that the duo died from a combination of sleeping pills and alcohol, the story becomes even more thrilling. The case was taken over by ACP Agni Mitra, who did an excellent job uncovering the truth and incarcerating the criminals.
The author has done a great job of including the key elements of crime fiction. There is a neat connection between the narratives (past-present and from different perspectives). It's impressive how the author seamlessly moves from past to present and tells the story from the viewpoint of the unknown dead character. Characters, their mannerisms, angst, and expressions are very vividly described in the writing. It's a mixed-paced story, you may feel slower at times and faster at others, but you never get bored because the narration is excellent. Mukherjee's writing style has always been simple and lucid if you have read any of his other books, then you are familiar with it. In some places, I felt the detailed description was unnecessary (but we all know the detailed description is also necessary), but overall it was a wonderful read!
My Rating:
4/5
